There’s a new sandwich shop in town and I didn’t really want to like it…but I do. I really do. Counter Service used to be a popup situation and is backed by the founder of chipotle. I didn’t want to support Big Sandwich, but these guys are gooood.

The name ain’t just cute – this place really is counter service only. It actually still looks like a popup with the postered walls and payphone ordering station. You may as well be standing outside, in line at a food truck.

They have quite a few breakfast sandwiches on the menu and some enticing vegetarian options. I went with the Baron, aka roast beef with white cheddar, watercress, horseradish, and mayo. First of all, let’s just agree that watercress is superior lettuce when it comes to sandwich toppings. While I thought the sandwich looked small (particularly for the $18 price tag), I was very satisfied. I do think this feels expensive when compared to spots like Milano Market, but whatcha gonna do. The sandwich had really good ratios and the bread was freakin perfect. The kind of crunch that scrapes the roof of your mouth but isn’t dry. Also, extra points for the little side cup of pickles.

It may be a serious sandwich, but they don’t take themselves too seriously. When I scanned that QR code, it led me to a cute personality quiz that proclaimed me to be a BEC aka a ride or die. Honestly, I think they’re spot on.
